Make friends with wild deer in Japan’s first permanent capital city, ancient and tranquil Nara! We begin by exploring the stone lantern-studded forests around Kasuga Taisha, pray for love and a happy marriage at Meoto Shrine, then explore the beautiful inner sanctuary.
We then have lunch at a nice little chaya (teahouse): try their Buddha Udon and wild boar dumplings! Their seasonal flavor soft serve ice creams are also good. We then walk to Nara’s signature sights, the sprawling Todaiji complex and Kofukuji, with a stop along the way for the view of Ukimido, the Floating Pavilion on Saga Pond. Our last stop is a lovely three-in-one Japanese garden that’s off the tourist track. Recommended for families, nature lovers and photographers.
