Kyoto was the Imperial capital of Japan from 794 AD to 1868, when the Emperor Meiji moved his court to Tokyo. For over a thousand years the Imperial family, influential Buddhist abbots, and samurai warlords vied with each other to establish beautiful villas, gardens, castles and temples in and around the old city, at the same time feeding an explosion of arts, culture and cuisine. Little wonder that Kyoto is the heart of the heart of Old Japan. At the same time, Kyoto’s a very modern city, with all the amenities you might expect, superbly safe, and the variety of food available is incredible. Our Kyoto tours take you to explore a mix of bucket-list sites and off the beaten track places, some of them just a short walk apart.
